Get Smart 2 is in the Works

A couple weeks ago Anne Hathaway mentioned to MTV that she would love to reprise her role of Agent 99 in a sequel to Get Smart, but hadn’t heard anything about a possible follow up. It now looks like she’ll get her chance, as its been announced Get Smart 2 is in the pipeline.

Variety reports, in an article announcing a new three-year first-look deal for Steve Carell with Warner Bros., the studio is in the early stages of developing a sequel to the summer hit, with Carell returning to play Agent Maxwell Smart.

As part of the new deal, Carell has formed Carousel Productions which will be run by Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock. The goal for Carell is to develop projects through the relationships he’s made over the course of a career that spans Second City, The Daily Show, films and The Office. The actor will produce the films, but not necessarily star in them.

DeGeneres was a correspondent on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart alongside Carell. Hartsock was a classmate at Denison U. and founded an educational theater company with Carell before they honed their comic chops at Second City in Chicago.

Get Smart grossed $130 million domestically and $230 million worldwide.
