Gossip Girl Spin-off in the Works

The CW is looking at a possible spin-off to the hit teen drama series, Gossip Girl. The trades say the network may use one of the upcoming episodes as a backdoor pilot to the potential new series.

The O.C. and Chuck creator Josh Schwartz is also behind Gossip Girl, which follows privileged teenagers as they attend an elite private school in New York City. It stars Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, Kelly Rutherford and Matthew Settle.

Rumors of a Girl spin-off have been circulating for some time, in part because Alloy Entertainment’s Gossip Girl book series, which the TV show is based on, already has a spin-off of its own, The It Girl. But according to insider sources, a televised Gossip Girl spin-off would not be The It Girl.

The spin-off would likely center on one of the show’s nine regular characters — although there’s always a chance a new character could be planted in the backdoor pilot.

Gossip Girl airs Mondays at 8pm.
