Herzog and Cage Remaking Bad Lieutenant

It looks like just about any film is open to a remake these days, as the unlikely duo of Werner Herzog and Nicolas Cage are set to redo Harvey Keitel’s 1992 flick Bad Lieutenant, reports Variety.
Herzog will direct and Cage will of course star in the updated version, due to be announced at Cannes. Production will start in late summer.
Abel Ferrara directed the original with the story following a depraved New York police officer, who was heavily involved in drugs, gambling, sex and stealing; the film received an NC-17 rating.
The new script was written by Billy Finkelstein, a TV writer with credits on Murder One, Law & Order and NYPD Blue. Stephen Belafonte, who brought Finkelstein to the project, is also producing, while development was financed by producers Alan and Gabe Polsky.

What?! That’s odd. I mean, Herzog’s and Cage are great, but Bad Lieutenant?!
