Joel Surnow and Martin Campbell Go Spy

Yesterday news broke that Martin Campbell would be directing Edge of Darkness, a new film that will see Mel Gibson in the leading role. Variety now has word on another new film from Martin Campbell, this time, a new spy-thriller from 24 co-creator Joel Surnow.
United Artists is developing the film which is being written by Surnow and fellow 24 producer Michael Loceff. No plot details have been made available, just that it will be a “contemporary spy-thriller”.
UA, which is run by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner, has made it a priority to find a commercially viable franchise for Cruise, though the studio wouldn’t confirm whether the Surnow/Campbell project was specifically designed for the Mission: Impossible star.
Surnow also developed and exec produced La Femme Nikita, which ran from 1997-2001, and served as producer or wrote episodes for The Equalizer, Miami Vice, Nowhere Man and Wiseguy.
