Not only was Kung Fu Panda a critical success it was also a hit with audiences – so far the animated flick has made over $150 million at the domestic box office. That’s why it should come as no surprise that DreamWorks is moving ahead with a sequel, and apparently work is already underway.

Over at The Animation Guild blog, Steve Hutely, business representative for the guild, recently visited DreamWorks and posted the following update:

Every building of the DW campus is bursting with activity. Monsters and Aliens, Shrek, Madagascar Deux, and on and on. DreamWorks’ Lakeside Building is getting enlarged, and the administrative staff is gone from the upper floors.

But down on the lower levels, artists are working. A story crew has started early work in Kung Fu Panda, the Sequel, even while animators are hand-drawing new material for the DVD of Kung Fu Panda, the original.

So what do you say, 2010 for Kung Fu Panda 2?

  8. To be frankly, Kungfu Panda also made a success in China.
In the cultural youth’s club, Douban.com, there is one or two film review on Kungfu Panda being recommended as “the hottest” and put on the homepage.
Kungfu Panda is receiving a stream of praise. It is not easy for an English movie accepted by us. The movie contains lots of Chinese traditional elements, but we think they are used properly. Its style just like Jackie Chan’s.
All in all, it is a funny movie that reliefs some people surffering bad mood after the great earthquake in May. We are also looking fowards to the second one. ^_^

  10. Ok, am I the only person in the world who found it rather unfunny, incredible cliche, and very shallow? KFP didn’t have near the sophistication or broad appeal of any Pixar film, and the animation (while stunning as far as lighting and textures) was either too complicated or too simple. The fight scenes we nearly impossible to follow… I could go on. I’d give it a 2/5 at best.

I almost think I saw a different movie. This is just not adding up.

  14. My boyfriend, our friend and I wondered this at the end of the movie. “Would they make another one?” Well, I certainly hope so. The animation was beautiful, and the music inspiring. All I hope for this particular movie is that it doesn’t end up like another Shrek (continuously pounding the story into the ground). That’s one reason I’m still a HUGE fan of Pixar (they come up with a different story; only rehashing it if the original worked very well). But I have to give DW credit where credit is due. This was a great movie and I hope its just as good as the original.

  16. I love Kung Fu Panda! It was one of my favorite movies I have ever seen in my whole life! My favorite part is when Shifu leaped onto a rock and asked Po if he wanted to learn kung fu, Po’s eyes are filled with tears and he began to cry. Po was sooo AWESOME and so funny! I saw them 5 times with my friends and I hope I’m going to see them again in theaters before it sold out and when it come out on DVD!

  19. I hope it doesn’t fall off like Shrek did. Shrek 1 was awesome but the sequels are no where near the first one. Kung Fu Panda is definitely an awesome movie but I’m bit apprehensive about the sequels.

  20. My favorite funny line by my parts are:
Po: I know you’re trying to be all mystical and kung fuey, but could you at least tell me where we’re going?
(Shifu just walked to the mountains with him.)
Po: You dragged me all the way out here for a bath? (Washed his armpits by accident)
Shifu: Panda! We do not wash our pits in the Pool of Sacred Tears!
    Po: The Pool of?
Shifu: This is where Oogway unraveled the mysteries of harmony and focus. This is the birthplace of kung fu.
(They remembered Oogway, then Shifu leaped onto a rock)
Shifu: Do you want to learn kung fu?
    Po: Yeah!
Shifu: Then I am your master!
Po: Okay! (Tears filled in Po’s eyes)
    Shifu: Don’t cry.
    Po (sniffed): Alright!
This is the most funniest and amazing parts and lines I’ve ever seen!

  21. My favorite sad to funny-at-the-end lines are:
Po: Master! Shifu! Shifu, are you okay?
Shifu: Po, you’re alive. Or we’re both dead.
Po: No, master. I didn’t die. I defeated Tai Lung.
    Shifu: You did?
    (Po nodded)
Shifu: Wow! It is just as Oogway foretold, you are the Dragon Warrior. You had bought peace to our valley and to me. Thank you.
Po: No, no, no, no! Don’t die, Shifu, please!
Shifu: I’m not dying, you idiot! Ah, Dragon Warrior, I’m simplly at peace finally.
Po: Oh, so um, I should stop talking?
    Shifu: If you can.
Anyway, I didn’t know that it will be release of Kung Fu Panda 2 in 2010 or 2011 when I’ll be 15 or 16. I cannot wait to see them as an early to late teen!
