New Line is in the process of acquiring the screen rights to Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, a nonfiction book by Vicki Myron with Bret Witter.

Pamela Gray is being tapped to write the adaptation with Meryl Streep attached to star.

The book, published in September, tells the story of a kitten, abandoned in a book drop on a cold winter night, who is rescued by workers at a library in rural Iowa. It becomes the library’s mascot, charming and inspiring patrons and staffers and, during the course of a long life, acquiring an international fan club.

According to the trades Streep will play the author, who works at the library and observed the impact that a kitten had on the townsfolk

Gray previously wrote A Walk on the Moon and Music of the Heart, which also starred Streep. She’s currently writing Betty Anne Waters, which Hilary Swank is attached to star in.
