Robert De Niro has dropped out of Edge of Darkness, with creative differences said to be the reason. The Martin Campbell directed film, which stars Mel Gibson, began shooting in Massachusetts on August 18. De Niro only arrived on the set last week.

De Niro had signed to play an operative sent to clean up the evidence in the murder of a young woman. Gibson stars as the victim’s father, a homicide detective for the Boston Police Department who uncovers her secret life, a corporate cover-up and government collusion.

The film, which is based on a 1985 BBC miniseries that Campbell directed, also stars Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic. William Monahan (The Departed) wrote the screenplay.

The filmmakers plan to shoot around De Niro’s character’s scenes until they find a replacement.
