Chalk up another remake for Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan. USA Today is reporting that the couple are planning a new version of the 1985 Brigitte Nielsen flick Red Sonja.

Rodriguez will produce the new big-screen adventure featuring the flame-haired comic-book vixen, while McGowan will wiggle into the metal mesh bikini. Longtime Rodriguez associate Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame) will direct. Filming will start this Ocitboer and hit theaters sometime in 2010.

The flick will be an origin story and take its cues from the comic books as well as works by pulp novelist Robert E. Howard, father of the original Sonja and Conan the Barbarian, rather than a straight up remake of the poorly received 1985 flick.

The real life couple are also planning a Barbarella remake, but that movie has faced several delays. Rodriguez is currently shooting Shorts, a family film with James Spader and Jon Cryer.
