It is where Lions are sent to Chinese emperors by traders to be allowed to do business in their territories. There are only a few lions in ancient China before the Han Dynasty. Later on, more lions emerged. Because they are mythical in China, people are amazed and start copying their appearance and behavior during performances.

Northern lion style

The style matches martial arts, and there are two types: a young person imitates a young lion, and two people do an adult lion. Both performers wear costumes that look like a lion. For example, their lower bodies are decorated with trousers that match the color of the lion’s body. Their shoes are the same colors and look like a lion’s claws. During the dance, the performers copied an adult lion, with one performer standing in the front and the other behind the first performer, who bent their waist to make it easy to move. The first performer changes the head of the lion, and the other moves the body of the lion. The performers copy other movements daily to lions, like rolling, climbing, jumping, and wrestling. The Northern Lion Dance is versatile compared to the Southern Lion Dance and needs more stunts to lift and balance on the elevated platforms.

Southern lion style

It is from the region known as Guangdong, and the dance must be performed in pairs. The dancers wear lion costumes and perform moves like the lion in the Northern dance. These actions include licking fur, scratching, and shaking the end of the body. These movements make the dance more dramatic and entertaining for the audience. The lion can also do other moves, like playing the ball.
